CHICAGO – Take an in-depth look at the 30 players that are currently in the Chicago Red Stars preseason camp.
GOALKEEPERS
Michele Dalton: The University of Wisconsin alum will be entering her third season with Chicago after signing in 2015. With a rookie campaign that saw her lead the league in GAA (0.917), Dalton has started in 19 matches and completed five shutouts.
Alyssa Naeher: Acquired before the start of the 2016 season, Naeher enters her second full year in Chicago. Leading the league in shutouts (6) and recording an NWSL record in shutout minutes (485), Naeher made an immediate impact in Chicago in just 14 starts.
DEFENDERS
Arin Gilliland: Since drafted in 2015 with the 8th overall pick, Gilliland has twice been awarded with league honors, including Best XI in 2016. The outside back was invited into her first U.S. Women’s National Team camp after an impressive 2016 campaign and will look to continue to rise in 2017.
Sarah Gorden: The first player ever drafted from DePaul University, Gorden appeared in four games in her rookie season with Chicago. A majority of her minutes are linked to an away match against FC Kansas City, where the team secured a shutout and playoff appearance.
Samantha Johnson: After leaving an impression during open tryouts in 2014, Johnson has been a consistent player for Chicago on the defensive line. Starting in 20 matches in 2016, she has now appeared in 46 matches and nearing 4000 minutes.
Julie Johnston: Drafted 3rd overall in the 2014 NWSL College Draft, Johnston has since been allocated and a stable call-up by U.S. Soccer. Overall, Johnston has played 4050 minutes for Chicago and has two goals and four assists to her name.
Katie Naughton: A rookie in 2016, Naughton appeared in 17 matches for the Red Stars, primarily filling in on the backline.
Emily Richardson: An All-Conference player at University of Evansville, Richardson was a standout at the open tryouts and was invited in for preseason.
Casey Short: After an outstanding first season in the NWSL, including NWSL Second XI honors, Short received a call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team and has been consistently on the roster all offseason. In 2016, she started all matches for Chicago and finished two goals.
MIDFIELDERS
Jackie Altschuld: An invitee into the 2017 preseason, Altschuld just completed her collegiate career at the University of San Diego. After finishing with six goals and five assists in 2016, she was named to the All-West Region team.
Danielle Colaprico: The 2015 NWSL Rookie of the Year and two-time Second XI honoree, Colaprico is gearing up for her third season in Chicago. In her first two seasons she has led the team in minutes.
Taylor Comeau: Comeau joined Chicago last season after her rookie season with the Portland Thorns. The central midfielder appeared in 19 matches and finished with one goal and one assist.
Vanessa DiBernardo: No one in the league has been a more consist player as DiBernardo. Appearing in 45 consecutive games, going back to her rookie season in 2014, DiBernardo will once again lead the central midfield and look to finish in the top three in assists in the NWSL for the third consecutive year.
Ashley Gogolin: A four-year starter at Wright State University, where she was a three-time Second Team Horizon League member, Gogolin joins the preseason roster after an impressive showing at the open tryouts.
Lauren Kaskie: Drafted by Chicago this year, Kaskie enters her rookie season after a stellar career at UCLA, where she appeared in 91 matches for the Bruins.
Kourtney Kutscher: An invitee after performing well at open tryouts, Kutscher recently graduated from California State University, Northridge. Twice named to the All-Big West teams, she finished her collegiate career with nine goals and seven assists.
Morgan Proffitt: The 2016 BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year, Proffitt joins the Red Stars after being drafted 12th overall. She finished her career at Marquette with 10 goals and three assists in 85 appearances.
Courtney Raetzman: Drafted out of University of Kentucky in the 2016 NWSL College Draft, Raetzman finished her rookie year with Chicago appearing in six matches.
Sofia Huerta: After switching to the midfield position midway through last season, Huerta finished as the top scorer in the league as a midfielder, which was strong enough for seventh overall in league (7).
Alyssa Mautz: The most senior player on the Red Stars roster, Mautz returns for her sixth season in Chicago. She has appeared in 71 matches during her five seasons in the NWSL.
Mary Luba: Earning a contract with the first team after leading the Red Stars Reserve to a National Championship in 2015, Luba has appeared in four matches, earning one shot on goal.
Brittany Ratcliffe: An invitee to the Red Stars preseason, Ratcliffe was drafted 17th overall in the 2016 NWSL College Draft by Boston Breakers, where she appeared in 15 games.
FORWARDS
Ashleigh Ellenwood: A member of the 2016 NWSL College Draft picks for Chicago, Ellenwood has been rehabbing from injury and played significant time with the Reserves last season.
Jannelle Flaws: The 33rd overall pick in 2016, Flaws played primarily with the Reserves, but earned a call-up to the first team during the Olympics. She has appeared in one match for Chicago.
Summer Green: The Red Stars acquired the rights to Green in the offseason from Seattle. Green enters her first full NWSL season after sitting out her rookie campaign due to a knee injury. The North Carolina alum finished her collegiate career with 18 goals and 20 assists.
Jen Hoy: Drafted in 2013 by Chicago, Hoy enters her fifth season with 13 overall goals and eight assists in 63 appearances.
Simone Kolander: Kolander is an invite to the preseason camp after a stellar career at University of Minnesota. In her final two seasons she posted 21 goals and seven assists and was awarded with back-to-back All-Big Ten First Team honors.
Stephanie McCaffrey: Acquired by Chicago in July 2016 from Boston, McCaffrey made an immediate presence on the team, scoring two goals in her first three matches.
Christen Press: Named captain last season, Press has appeared in 38 matches and has scored 25 goals, most in Red Stars history. Press has been a staple member of the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Cara Walls: Walls returns for her third season with Chicago after being drafted in 2015 out of the University of Wisconsin. She has appeared in 23 matches for the Red Stars and has scored two goals.
