Points All Around in Two Back-To-Back Rounds

Adelaide, Newcastle tied twice; Victory gets first win

CHICAGO –  The W-League saw multiple games within a week, with teams earning points left and right.

In Round 9’s first match-up, Canberra United narrowly defeated Sam Johnson and Melbourne Victory, 2-1. The Victory kept their first half one-goal lead until the 52nd minute when Canberra equalized. Johnson and the Victory defense had their hands full as Canberra released 17 shots on goal before converting a penalty kick in the 89th minute to give them the win.

Four Red Stars players went head-to-head in Round 9 as Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets fought to a 2-2 draw. The game proved to be evenly matched as Adelaide and Newcastle managed 14 and 13 shots, respectively, with shots coming from Adelaide’s Danielle Colaprico and Sofia Huerta and Newcastle’s Jen Hoy. Katie Naughton and Adelaide’s defense found themselves busy, blocking four shots and clearing 23 opportunities.

Just days later, Round 10 began with Melbourne Victory coming away with their first win of the season, defeating Brisbane Roar 4-1. Johnson and the Victory defense stepped up big in the win, as Brisbane had a total of 20 shots, eight on goal.

After their Round 9 bye week, Perth Glory faced off against the Newcastle Jets. Perth had a chance to take the lead in the first half, but Vanessa DiBernardo’s penalty kick was saved by Jet’s goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, leaving the first half scoreless. Both teams would find the back of the net in the second half to end the match 1-1.

Round 9 ended with another 1-1 draw, Adelaide United’s second of the week against Melbourne City. It was Melbourne City who grabbed a goal in the 25th minute to take the lead into halftime. In the 70th minute, Huerta would take on Melbourne’s defense and send a perfectly assisted ball to Racheal Quigley, who scored the equalizing goal. Adelaide out shot City 15 to 12, as each Red Stars player managed a shot on goal.
