Player to Watch: Casey Short

CHICAGO – A blue flash bombs down the wing, beats her defender and crosses in a peach of a pass to set up yet another Sam Kerr goal. If you can’t keep up with Casey Short, we don’t blame you. The Naperville native put on the afterburners again and again in Chicago’s 2-0 win against Utah this past weekend. Her relentless performances are something opposing teams have had to get used to as Short’s become one of the most consistent faces in not only the Red Star’s starting 11 but the NWSL Team of the Month’s as well. Short has been picked up the award every month this season. In addition to creating the chance that became the Red Stars opening goal last weekend, Short led the team in tackles, interceptions, and clearances. When the club has needed a player to lean on, Short’s been there.

Through all the changes this season, Short has started 14 of the Red Stars 15 games while making 35 clearances and 11 interceptions. When she’s not starting fires beneath her feet or putting them out on defense, she’s also proven to be an excellent distributor, providing the team with 7 key passes this season, which includes the perfect ball to Kerr on Saturday.

Short and the Red Stars go again this week against the Washington Spirit on Saturday, August 10th at Maureen Hendricks Field at 6 p.m. C.T.
