Player to Watch: Emily Boyd

CHICAGO — With Sunday’s 2-1 victory it put the Chicago Red Stars on top of the NWSL standings. Much will be made about the two goals in four minutes from the Red Stars, but a key moment in the match kept Chicago in the lead. In the 38th minute, goalkeeper Emily Boyd made a tremendous save that kept the Red Stars in the lead. Houston’s Kealia Ohai crossed the ball to Sofia Huerta and fired a shot just inches from the goal. Boyd was able to react quickly, sticking her leg out immediately and deflecting the shot wide.

Without that save, Chicago would’ve dropped crucial points on the road. Since stepping into the starting goalkeeper role, Boyd has made some tremendous saves for Chicago. In the week 5 matchup against North Carolina, it was Boyd again who kept Chicago in the lead with another fantastic stop from a Debinha header.

Through three games this season, Boyd has made 9 saves and faces off against the Washington Spirit on Sunday, the same team she made her NWSL debut against last season. In a rainy Maryland Soccerplex, she made 4 saves and kept a clean sheet. With four more NWSL games under her belt since then, Boyd continues to make an impact for the team as the season enters the summer months.
