National Women’s Soccer League Announces 2014 College Draft Order

CHICAGO, IL – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today the official order for the 2014 NWSL College Draft, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. (ET) at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention in Philadelphia.

The league’s second annual college draft will consist of a total of 36 selections made over four rounds, the order for which was originally set by reverse finish at the end of the 2013 NWSL regular season.

As the lone expansion club to join the NWSL this season, the Houston Dash will have the second pick in the first-round as well as the first pick in the second, third and fourth-rounds of the College Draft.

Teams will have five minutes during which to make their selection in first round and then three minutes in each subsequent round. Each club will also have one five-minute timeout per round, which may be used for further discussion, rule clarification, or trade discussion at any time in that round.

The draft will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and will be open to the public. Fans will also be able to follow the draft on NWSLsoccer.com as well as on Twitter (@NWSL and @chicagoredstars).

The trading of draft picks has taken place and may continue to occur through the 2014 NWSL College Draft. See below for the current order of selections in the first round:

2014 NWSL College Draft – Rd. 1

1 – Washington Spirit
2 – Houston Dash
3 – Chicago Red Stars (via Seattle Reign FC)
4 – Chicago Red Stars
5 – FC Kansas City (via Boston Breakers)
6 – Sky Blue FC
7 – Seattle Reign FC (via Portland Thorns FC)
8 – Boston Breakers (via FC Kansas City)
9 – Western New York Flash

The Chicago Red Stars will also receive the #22 pick overall (3rd round).

The Red Stars received the #3 pick from the Seattle Reign in a March 2013 trade that sent the Reign midfielder Keelin Winters and the Red Stars 2014 4th round draft pick. The Red Stars gave up their 2014 second round pick (#11 overall) in a trade with the Boston Breakers in October 2013 for the rights to defender Casey Short, who was the #5 overall pick in the 2013 NWSL College Draft.
