Storylines
Sharing the Wealth: Out of all 11 goals that Chicago has scored this calendar year, including the Challenge Cup, 10 of them have come from a different player. During last week’s 4-1 victory against Sky Blue FC, Kealia Watt (who scored twice), Zoey Goralski, and Vanessa DiBernardo all found the back of the net. In the past two matchups, this year against Washington, Morgan Gautrat and Sarah Luebbert scored.
Stars between the Sticks: Saturday’s primetime matchup presents fans a chance to watch two of the best goalkeepers in the NWSL with Washington’s Aubrey Bledsoe and Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher. Bledsoe, the former Goalkeeper of the Year after 86 saves and 11 clean sheets last year, comes into Saturday with nine saves in the Fall Series and 17 total saves so far in 2020. Naeher, who leads all goalkeepers in the Fall Series with 11 saves for the Red Stars, is currently the US Women’s National Team’s number one in the net and is a two-time World Cup Champion after winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2019.
Keeping it Close: Fans tuning into the game on Saturday could have the chance to watch a game that might go down to the final whistle, as five of six matchups between Chicago and Washington dating back to last year have been decided by only one goal. That was the trend in both games the Red Stars and Spirit played in 2020 as both their Challenge Cup and Fall Series games ended with a 2-1 score, with Washington claiming the victory in both.
Semicolon Bookstore: As part of the NWSL’s Community Shield initiative the Chicago Red Stars have chosen to represent Semicolon Bookstore, the only Black woman-owned bookstore in Chicago, for the remainder of the Fall Series. “Semicolon is an amazing business to play for because of the work they do to spread knowledge and power throughout our community and the representation they bring for women of color in literature and art,” said Tierna Davidson.
