Storylines
Magnificent Milestones: Danielle Colaprico put the first tally in the regular season goals column during her last appearance for the Red Stars. Taking a penalty kick, Colaprico tricked OL Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce into diving the wrong way, burying the ball in the lower corner of the net. This goal was Colaprico’s first since 2019 and the first from the spot in her career. Rachel Hill, meanwhile, is set to make her 100th NWSL regular-season appearance if she takes the field against the Current. Currently registering 99 regular season appearances, Hill will reach the milestone while having 40 appearances with the Red Stars and 59 with the Orlando Pride.
Holding On: The Red Stars are currently sitting in sixth place in the league standings, with only one point separating them from seventh place Angel City FC. A win against the Current would keep Angel City, who also play on Wednesday, from overtaking them in the league standings. A win for the Red Stars would also make it harder for Kansas City to hold onto their current first place standing in the league, since one point separate the Current (32) from second place Portland and third place San Diego (both 31). The Red Stars and Kansas City have met already this season, drawing 2-2 June 18 in Kansas City. The Red Stars also have more history with Kansas City this year, when a 2-1 loss to the Current ended the Red Stars 2022 Challenge Cup campaign.
Eyes on the Prize: The Red Stars last four matches of the regular season are all against teams the Red Stars have already faced this season: Kansas City, Houston, Portland and Los Angeles. In the last faceoffs with each of these teams, the Red Stars have either lost (4-1 Houston Dash, 1-0 Angel City) or drawn (2-2 Kansas City, 2-2 Portland Thorns). Marking a win against any of these teams would be significant for the Red Stars. Currently, the Red Stars are within five points on the leaderboard of all of the teams they will see once more this season.
