Keys to the Match: Chicago Red Stars vs Reign FC

CHICAGO- The Chicago Red Stars head to the Evergreen State this weekend to take on Reign FC. With a record crowd expected for Sunday’s game, the club’s supporters will make sure the Red Stars don’t feel the same love they received at SeatGeek Stadium last weekend. Here are the keys to match:

Thrift Shop: The Reign FC front office popped tags and then some in the past two weeks, acquiring three new players and trading for another. Their haul includes Canadian international Rebecca Quinn and Schuyler DeBree, the former #3 and #11 overall picks in the 2018 NWSL draft. The duo played together at Duke University and the pair of young defenders will team up again in the NWSL. Former Red Stars midfielder Rosie White is set to face her former teammates after getting picked up by the Reign last week. The New Zealand international played one season in Chicago before leaving last winter to focus on World Cup duties. Reign FC also acquired goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme through a trade with the Washington Spirit.

Wing$: Red Stars winger Yuki Nagasato didn’t touch the net, but her goal and assist did against Reign FC back in April. The Japanese international had a player of the match performance, setting up a fantastic Casey Short chipped goal before scoring an incredible lob of her own. The Red Stars went on to win round one 3-0 and Nagasato led the team in passes (55) and key passes (4). The Reign did a better job containing her in their round two 1-0 win, but Nagasato still made an impact, leading the team in duels (16) and possession gained (11). Nagasato enters the rubber match in excellent form, completing 11 key passes in her last 3 games.

Can’t Hold Us: Chicago supporters can’t help but put their hands up whenever Sam Kerr touches the ball. The Australian leads the NWSL in both scoring (10 goals) and shots on goal (27) even after missing three games this season due to World Cup duty where she scored five times for Australia. Now back in the states, Kerr hasn’t missed a beat and scored a double nutmeg beauty on national television last week against North Carolina. She’s no stranger to scoring against the Reign either, scoring a late 87th-minute winner last July to secure all three points for Chicago.
