Sam Kerr Takes Home Two Awards at 2019 ESPYS

CHICAGO —  It was another banner night for Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr, who won the 2019 ESPY Award for Best NWSL Footballer for the first time and won Best International Women’s Footballer for a second consecutive year.

Kerr was once again the most lethal goalscorer in the NWSL. She won the league’s Golden Boot award again in 2018 after a 16 goal campaign and is favored to achieve a three-peat, currently leading the league with nine goals in eight games played this season. At just 25 years of age, Kerr is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of the NWSL with 68 goals.

At this summer’s FIFA World Cup, Kerr made more history against Jamaica in the Group Stage. She became the first player born outside of the U.S. to score more than three goals in a World Cup game with a four-goal performance against the Reggae Girlz.

In her native Australia, Kerr was named the Westfield W-League’s first-ever Marquee Signing and rewarded Perth Glory by leading them to the Grand Final. She scored 13 goals in 11 games and won the Golden Boot for the second-straight season in that league as well. A hat trick against Western Sydney Wanderers made her the W-League’s all-time leading scorer, meaning she holds that honor in two separate leagues.

Kerr and the Red Stars now travel to BBVA to take on the Houston Dash this Saturday, July 13 at 7:30 pm live on NBC Sports Chicago.
