CHICAGO — Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr was awarded the National Women’s Soccer League’s Most Valuable Player Award for the 2019 season.
Kerr was once again the league’s leading goal scorer and won her unprecedented third-consecutive NWSL Golden Boot. Her 18 goals this season are a record for most goals in a single season, smashing the record she previously set back in 2017. She had five multi-goal games, including a hat-trick against Orlando in June. Kerr was among the league leaders in assists as well, ranking fifth this season with five.
For her key performances, she was awarded two NWSL Player of the Month Awards and a record five NWSL Player of the Week honors.
Kerr becomes Chicago’s first player to win the MVP award and becomes the first player in league history to be named MVP on multiple occasions. Her and the Red Stars will face the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL Championship on Sunday, October 27. Kickoff from WakeMed Soccer Park is scheduled for 2:30pm CT on ESPN.
