Chicago, IL – The Red Stars continue their push for a playoff position with a three-game homestand beginning tomorrow night when the team takes on FC Kansas City at 7:00 p.m. CT at the Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex. The match is being presented by Midtown Athletic Club for ‘Health & Wellness Night’.
The Red Stars (7-7-7, 28pts) were handed a tough 2-1 loss by the Washington Spirit on August 2nd. Red Stars captain and midfielder Lori Chalupny opened scoring in the fourth minute of the match off of an assist from forward Melissa Tancredi. Unfortunately the team was unable to keep the lead, as Spirit midfielder Christine Nairn scored in the 48th minute and midfielder Yael Averbunch scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute, with just seconds remaining. The loss kept the Red Stars in fifth place heading into Saturday’s match and subsequently guaranteed FC Kansas City a spot in the NWSL playoffs.
FC Kansas City (9-7-6, 41pts) is coming off of a 2-1 victory over the Boston Breakers on Wednesday. Amy Rodriguez scored in the eighth minute for the Blues but Heather O’Reilly provided the equalizer for the Breakers off a penalty kick at the 15th minute. Sarah Hagen scored the game-winning goal for the Blues in the 26th minute. Due to severe weather the teams were unable to play the second half of the match and the match result stood after one half. With the win, FC Kansas City remains undefeated at home and earned home field advantage in the NWSL playoffs.
This is the final meeting of the season between the two teams with both previous encounters ending with a 1-0 victory to the “Blues” of Kansas City.
This is a must win match for the Red Stars, who could be eliminated from playoff contention this weekend with a loss or a draw to FC Kansas City. A win would put the team just 2 points behind Portland, with 2 games remaining on the year.
