Chicago —- The Chicago Red Stars are back home to play Reign FC on Sunday, June 23 at SeatGeek Stadium. Here’s everything you need to know about the opponent.
Opponent Form: Seattle’s last game was against the Washington Spirit where the game ended up in a 1-1 draw. Reign FC midfielder Jess Fishlock scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute. With the draw, the Reign FC have 11 points and are in seventh place of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Round Two: Both teams have already played each other this season, as the Red Stars won the first matchup 3-0 at SeatGeek Stadium back in April. Casey Short’s beautiful chip and Brooke Elby’s first NWSL goal were of note, but it was Yuki Nagasato’s Player of the Week performance that stole the show. Nagasato assisted Short’s goal to open the scoring before a fantastic finish of her own. With goalkeeper Lydia Williams caught of her line, Nagasato composed herself and launched a rocket far away from the 18-yard box that found the back of the net.
Acquisitions: The welcome return of Fishlock from her loan spell at Lyon has added a major veteran presence to Reign FC. The Welsh salvaged a point for her team last weekend with her goal and she has resumed her role as the team’s rock in the midfield. The team also has added reinforcements in the recent addition of midfielder Erin Yenney, who played in three games last season for the Red Stars. Bethany Balcer, one the stories of the year in the NWSL, has received Reign FC’s faith as the midfielder leads the team with 3 goals.
Fun Fact to Know: Reign FC are currently on a 5-game unbeaten run dating back to May. The last defeat came against Chicago on April 28.
