CHICAGO- The Chicago Red Stars travel to Providence Park on Sunday, August 25 for a matchup against the Portland Thorns FC with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 pm CT on ESPNews. Here’s everything you need to know about our upcoming opponent.
Opponent Form:
With three wins in their last five games, Portland has risen to the top of the NWSL Standings. The Thorns struck early against the Washington Spirit last Saturday. Haley Raso and Emily Sonnet each found the back of the net to give the Thorns a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes of the game. Christine Sinclair finished it off in the 63rd minute and sealed a 3-1 victory. Providence Park is once again a fortress for the Thorns, who has a 5-2-1 record at home in 2019.
The Trilogy:
This will be the final game Portland and Chicago will meet this regular season. The Red Stars welcomed the Thorns to SeatGeek Stadium for the team’s home opener back in April. In a game that featured multiple lead changes and a Sinclair hat-trick, Chicago scored twice in the final 15 minutes to give each team a point in a wild 4-4 draw. In June it was Portland’s turn to host their home opener, defeating Chicago 3-0 thanks to a brace by Midge Purce.
Who’s Hot:
The duo of Haley Raso and Sinclair has been a handful for NWSL defenses to handle. Raso has three goals in her last five games, while Sinclair is once again in contention for the NWSL Golden Boot race with eight goals this season. She has three goals in her last five games as well, with both getting on the scoresheet in last Saturday’s win.
Fun Stat To Know:
Portland currently leads the NWSL with 36 goals scored this season.
