Early Goal Lifts Chicago to Win Over Houston

CHICAGO – An early goal from Katie Johnson propelled the Chicago Red Stars to a 1-0 victory against the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Red Stars defense stifled the Houston offense, allowing only two shots on target en route to their second shutout of the season.

Key Moments

7’ Houston’s Chapman misplays a clearance and Vanessa DiBernardo is able to step in and intercept the ball and distribute it to Johnson. The forward confidently fires a shot from outside of the 18-yard box and slots the ball past the goalkeeper for the first Red Stars goal of her career.

24’ Frenzy in the box following a corner kick allows Polkinghorne plenty of time to fire a dangerous shot towards goal, but the ball goes wide.

56’ McCaskill drives a corner kick that lands at the shin of Naughton and heads towards goal, but Houston is able to clear it at the last second for another corner kick. This time Wright is able to get her head to the ball, but it goes wide.

57’ Nagasato links up with Kerr who flicks the ball over the defenders head, times the shot well and fires the ball towards goal missing the back of the net by centimeters.

85’ Narin sends a ball into a clustered 18-yard box that finds teammate Kyah Simon. Simon heads the ball towards goal, but great positioning by Boyd allows her to easily handle the shot.

Game Notes

  • Katie Johnson scored her first goal of the season and her first-ever goal in a Red Stars uniform. It was her ninth career NWSL goal.
