The Red Stars forward has four goals in past two games
Chicago, Ill. – The United States Women’s Soccer team has completed nine out of ten games on their Victory Tour and no one is heating up more than Christen Press. In just around forty minutes over the past two games, against Trinidad & Tobago and China, respectively, the Chicago Red Stars forward has scored four goals.
In the first Victory Tour match against Trinidad & Tobago, Press showed her talent less than one minute after entering the match as a second half substitution. In the 62nd minute, Press took her first touch of the game to turn a defender, cut around her one more time and struck the ball perfectly with her left foot to beat the goalkeeper (WATCH GOAL HERE). The second goal for Press would come thirteen minutes later, as she one-touched a cross from defender Ali Krieger that slipped past the Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper (WATCH GOAL HERE). A beautiful cross by Lindsey Horan would allow Press to finish a perfectly timed header and give the forward a hat trick for the third time in her international career.
Against China she didn’t let that fire burn out. Press entered in the 79th minute and would score just two minutes later. After a poor clearance by China in the 81st minute, Press made a sharp cut by a China defender and finished it perfectly with her left foot (WATCH GOAL HERE).
Alyssa Naeher, recently acquired during the off-season, earned the start in goal against China. After seeing little to no action throughout the entire match, Naeher came up with a huge save on the final whistle that allowed her to earn her second international shutout in just her fourth U.S. appearance.
Defender Julie Johnston played the entire 90 minutes in both matches. The NWSL Best XI defender, a native of Mesa, Arizona, was able to return to her home crowd when the United States played China at University of Phoenix.
The United States National Team will play in the last Victory Tour match this Wednesday, December 16, at 7 P.M. CT against China in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game can be watched live on FOX Sports 1 or FOX Sports Go.
