Match Preview:
CHICAGO – With one spot remaining to compete in the NWSL Playoffs, the Red Stars face the Orlando Pride in their final match of the series this weekend.
Chicago is coming off its third-consecutive draw after Portland came from behind to equalize a 2-2 match.
Sam Kerr’s brace helped give Chicago the two-goal advantage heading into the 50th minute of the match, but shortly after, Tobin Heath and Christine Sinclair were able to capitalize on their shots and tie it up with 20 minutes remaining. Neither side could find the go-ahead goal, leaving the match at a stalemate.
Orlando is also coming off a four-game winless streak, being defeated the last two games to Playoff contenders.
As the match was heading to a scoreless draw, North Carolina were able to find three goals in the final 15 minutes. Orlando’s Shelina Zadorsky tallied an own goal to put the Courage on the board. Minutes later, North Carolina’s Debinha and Lynn Williams added to the lead, defeating Orlando 3-0.
Despite taking control of Orlando in prior years, the Red Stars haven’t had much luck taking on the Pride in 2018.
Hosting two of the three matches on home soil, the Red Stars lost against the Pride for the first time in early May. Chioma Ubogagu and Rachel Hill capitalized on a 2-0 defeat on the Red Stars. Later that month, Chicago was defeated again, conceding an uncharacteristic five goals in a 2-5 loss. Kerr notched her first brace as a Red Star, but the goals weren’t enough to take any advantage.
After the trip to Orlando, Chicago will take a mini break during the FIFA international window and will resume play during its 2018 home finale with the make-up match against Sky Blue FC on Tuesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and NWSLsoccer.com.
