Chicago Travels to North Carolina to Take on League Toppers

CHICAGO – The Red Stars look to put an end to the Courage’s undefeated season when they travel to North Carolina on Sunday, May 6, for both teams’ first duel of the season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and the go90 app.

On Wednesday, Orlando ended Chicago’s four-game undefeated streak, defeating the Red Stars 2-0 at Toyota Park. Chioma Ubogagu and Rachel Hill tallied the goal for the Pride.

Most recently, North Carolina shutout Houston 2-0 on the road, extending their record to 5-0-1, leading the league with 16 points, being the only remaining team that has yet to lose. U.S. WNT Crystal Dunn and forward Kristen Hamilton added the goals for the Courage.

During last season, Chicago became the only team to defeat North Carolina in all three-regular season matches. The first two contests came in back-to-back weeks, with Chicago handing North Carolina their first home loss in a 3-1 ending, followed by a 3-2 Red Stars win. Danielle Colaprico, Christen Press, Sofia Huerta and Alyssa Mautz tallied one goal during those two matches, while Vanessa DiBernardo tallied a goal in each.

At the end of the season, the Red Stars continued their win-streak against the newest club, earning a 2-1 win as Yuki Nagasato and Julie Ertz tallied for Chicago. But despite going undefeated against North Carolina in the regular season, the Courage narrowly defeated the Red Stars 1-0 in the NWSL Semifinal off a last-minute goal from Denise O’Sullivan.

In 2018, the Courage have only had one home match, earning a draw, while the Red Stars have yet to lose on the road in 2018. Both teams share similar stats; Dunn and Mautz each have three goals and one assist and Jess McDonald and Huerta each share two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher has double the saves (15) that Courage keeper Sabrina D’Angelo has (6), but has earned only two shutouts to North Carolina’s four.

The Red Stars return home on Saturday, May 12, when they host the Houston Dash for the second time this year. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and the go90 app.
