Chicago Steals a Point in 1-1 Draw Against North Carolina

CHICAGO – After a hard-fought match, the Red Stars ended a 1-1 draw with North Carolina Courage. Sam Kerr notched the equalizing goal in the 64th minute.

Finding themselves on defense much of the first half, the Red Stars fought back and saw the first bit of scoring opportunity as Danielle Colaprico’s corner kick was just tipped over the crossbar to keep the scoreline level. Moments later, North Carolina’s corner kick skimmed off the crossbar, continuing the scoreless stalemate.

But it was the Courage who eventually got on the board in the 22nd minute. Jessica McDonald spread the ball wide, crossing the ball in front of goal toward the far post, where Debinha headed a bouncing ball into the net.

After North Carolina outshot Chicago 10 to four, the Courage entered halftime with the 1-0 lead.

Well into the second half, the Red Stars found a string of momentum up the field, trying to capitalize off an open chance. Morgan Brian controlled the ball at the top of the box, streaking it toward the near post only to ricochet off the goal post and out of danger.

Chicago stuck with the pressure and came up with the equalizer in the 64th minute as Kerr headed the ball in off a Vanessa DiBernardo cross.

After a controversial tackle in the box on Kerr, the match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Red Stars turn right around on Wednesday, August 15, heading to Seattle to take on the Reign. The match will kick off at 9:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and NWSLsoccer.com.

CHICAGO GOALS
Sam Kerr (64’) – Just after Morgan Brian hit a shot off the goal post, the Red Stars continued the pressure on the Courage backline. Vanessa DiBernardo controlled the ball out wide and sent the ball in toward the middle of the box, where Sam Kerr awaited to head it in past goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland for the equalizer.
