CHICAGO, Ill. (June 23, 2015) – The Chicago Red Stars announced today that they completed a trade with the Washington Spirit. Chicago traded one of their international player spots for the remainder of the 2015 season and the 2016 season in exchange for Washington’s second and third round picks in the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft.
This is a favorable trade for Chicago, as they have been a draft savvy team for many years now. The Red Stars selected Julie Johnston in 2014, who went on to win NWSL rookie of the year in her first season and is currently a defender for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In the 2015 draft Sofia Huerta was selected, and she has already had a tremendous impact on the team. Huerta was the first NWSL player to ever win back-to-back Player of the Week awards; she also won Player of the Month for May 2015.
Chicago Red Stars, founded in 2007, are one of nine professional clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The team boasts players from the U.S. and Canadian Women’s National Teams, in addition to some of the top international players from around the world.
