Chicago, Ill. – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) unveiled today the Chicago Red Stars complete regular season schedule for the 2016 season. The Red Stars will begin their fourth season in the NWSL when they face Houston Dash on the road, Saturday, April 16.
The Chicago Red Stars first home game will kick-off at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, the new home venue for the Red Stars, on Saturday, April 23 at 6 p.m. CT against Western New York Flash. The home stand will continue the following weekend when first-year NWSL club Orlando Pride and Alex Morgan come to Chicago on Sunday, May 1, for a 5 p.m. CT contest.
The 20 game schedule includes a four-game regional match-up against back-to-back reigning NWSL Champions FC Kansas City, with two slated at Toyota Park on Friday, May 13 and Wednesday, September 7.
The Red Stars play matches on four different days of the week this season, including nine weekend contests. In addition to playing five Saturday home games, Red Stars play host to four Sunday home games and one Wednesday home game at Toyota Park.
A true test will come down to the final four games for Chicago as they face fellow semifinal contenders Seattle Reign FC, FC Kansas City (twice) and Washington Spirit to close out the regular season. Once again, the top four teams in the standings qualify for a spot in the NWSL playoffs.
The NWSL will also be taking a majority of August off due to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Chicago Red Stars begins its preseason preparation for the 2016 campaign in March with three match-ups against Illinois State University, Notre Dame and Northwestern University. A full preseason schedule can be found here.
United States Women’s National team members Christen Press and Julie Johnston return to Chicago in 2016 and are joined by U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who was acquired from the Boston Breakers during the offseason. Reigning NWSL Rookie of the Year Danielle Colaprico will enter into preseason with the Red Stars after earning her first call-up by the U.S. National Team during January camp.
