CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars won its second consecutive match in its final 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) preseason game on a torrentially rainy Wednesday evening against Notre Dame 3-2 at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Indiana.

The Red Stars immediately put the pressure on Notre Dame and were able to strike first when Alyssa Mautz found the back of the net in the eighth minute. Chicago would continue to control possession until the 24th minute, when a breakdown on the defensive line led to a Notre Dame goal from Jen Westendorf.

The Red Stars had several chances to wind down the first half, but would take a 1-1 tie into the locker room.

Chicago wasted no time getting comfortable to start the second half after two quick goals by Courtney Raetzman and Jen Hoy in a five minute span. As the rain continued to come down in the 71st minute, Notre Dame forward Kaleigh Olmsted blasted one from thirty yards out that found the back of the net to pull the Irish within one. The Red Stars would hold the Fighting Irish off for the final 19 minutes of the game and take the win, edging Notre Dame 3-2.

The Chicago Red Stars will now turn their attention to preparing for the National Women’s Soccer League season when they head on the road to Houston on April 16.

Chicago’s home opener at Toyota Park is slated for April 23 against Western New York Flash at 6 p.m. (Central). Single game and season tickets to the Red Stars games are currently on sale and can be purchased here.
