Chicago Red Stars Announce 2014 Team Awards

CHICAGO –  The Chicago Red Stars announced today the 2014 team awards from participating media, front office staff, and fans.

Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny was voted Most Valuable Player. Chalupny, 30, started in 22 games for the Red Stars this season, netting 5 goals. She ranks 10th in the National Women’s Soccer League for minutes played with 2003, right behind Leigh Ann Robinson of FC Kansas City.

Defender and U.S. National Team pool player Julie Johnston claims both Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors. Johnston was also named NWSL Rookie of the Year, and finished in the NWSL Second XI.

Johnston, 22, was the No. 3 overall selection in the 2014 NWSL Draft and scored two goals to go along with two assists in 21 games during her rookie campaign with the Red Stars.

The Mesa, Ariz. native played a major role in helping Chicago to the league’s second-ranked defense, which allowed just 26 goals in 24 games this season for a 1.08 goals against average.

The team’s Community Service Award went to goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. LeBlanc who finished second in the league this year for shutouts, and ranks third overall, took her successes off the field to help inspire and motivate youth in Chicagoland, as well as globally. LeBlanc is best known for her role as a UNICEF sport ambassador. Goalkeeper Taylor Vancil, finished right behind LeBlanc in the voting for her work with Chicago-based nonprofit Gonzo Soccer.

New Zealand international Abby Erceg claimed the Unsung Hero Award for the Chicago Red Stars. Erceg played in, and started, 11 games for the team, and was an instrumental part of Chicago’s defense.
