The Chicago Red Stars have added veteran forward, Cheyna Matthews, to the preseason roster. Matthews previously played with Racing Louisville FC in 2021.
Drafted seventh overall in 2016 by the Washington Spirit, Matthews played four seasons with the Spirit, making 55 appearances with 33 starts, and scoring 11 goals and recording three assists. In 2021, Matthews joined Racing Louisville FC in their inaugural season in the National Women’s Soccer League. The forward played 17 matches with Louisville, made four starts and scored one goal.
Internationally, Matthews has played for the US Under-23 youth national team and Jamaica’s women’s national team. Matthews debuted with Jamaica in February of 2019 and was called up again later that year to join the team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Massachusetts native made her World Cup debut against Brazil in Jamaica’s opening match.
The Red Stars’ preseason roster now stands at 29 players. The club opens the 2023 NWSL season March 25 when the Red Stars travel to San Diego to take on the Wave. The team returns home the following week to play the Houston Dash in the home opener at SeatGeek Stadium April 1. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at www.chicagoredstars.com/tickets.
