Chicago Notches First Loss in Close, Physical Match Against Utah

Four misconducts and 18 fouls flew between the two teams over 4,000 ft in the air

CHICAGO–The Chicago Red Stars fell 0-1 to Utah Royals FC at Rio Tinto Stadium for its first loss of the season.

Chicago forward Katie Johnson drew a red card in the 43rd minute to leave the Red Stars with just 10 players on the field for the rest of the match. The two teams drew a combined 18 fouls and four misconducts throughout the 90 minutes in a full-fledged battle.

Utah midfielder Gunnhildur Jonsdottir found forward Amy Rodriguez for the game-winner in the 84th minute. Chicago was able to keep the Royals scoreless for 41 minutes with just 10 players.

Key Moments

7th Minute: Four’s a crowd as Sam Kerr creates space amongst three Utah defenders to shoot right, with Nicole Barnhart making the save.

20th Minute: Utah midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta shoots from the top of the 18, sending the ball right into the arms of Chicago goalkeeper Emily Boyd who was appearing in her first game of 2019 for the Red Stars.

42nd Minute: Johnson and Boquete contested for a ball in the air. Johnson was shown a red card and the Red Stars were forced to play a player down for the remainder of the game.

63rd Minute: Kerr brings the ball into the box before crossing to Mautz, who sends it just over the bar off a first time shot.

84th Minute: Amy Rodriguez scores her first goal of the 2019 NWSL regular season off a sliding pass from Jonsdottir, putting the Royals up 1-0 in the final minutes of the match.

Player of the Match, presented by Magellan

With a passing accuracy at an astounding 83.3% from the central midfield, Danielle Colaprico has been named the Magellan Player of the Match. Colaprico created three chances on goal for her teammates and played the entire 90 minutes and took charge of the midfield with Red Stars playing a player down since the 42nd minute.
