Chicago Looks for Final Home Victory Against North Carolina

GAME NOTES

CHICAGO –  In their final regular season game at Toyota Park, the Red Stars look for the victory over league leaders North Carolina Courage. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CT, on Sunday, September 3, at Toyota Park. Tickets are available here.

The Red Stars broke their three-game losing streak and hope to continue in the right direction after defeating Washington Spirit 2-1 on the road.

Midfielder Kristie Mewis, who was newly allocated to Chicago from Washington, notched her first goal on her first shot for the Red Stars, in part to a Danielle Colaprico assist. Captain Christen Press scored the game winner off a Julie Ertz lobbed ball into the box, beating the goalkeeper and sliding it into the back of the net late in the game.

On Wednesday, Chicago switched the team up even more, acquiring U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Morgan Brian from the Houston Dash. In return, the Red Stars sent Mewis to the Dash.

In a Wednesday night battle, the North Carolina Courage defeated Washington Spirit 3-2, clinching the first playoff spot in the NWSL.

During the match, Washington opened the match with a goal in the first 10 minutes thanks to Estefania Banini. North Carolina countered with three-straight goals; the first coming in first half stoppage time with Samantha Mewis equalizing before the half. Jessica McDonald notched a brace in a five-minute span with nearly 25 minutes left in the match. Despite the Spirit’s Cheyna Williams scoring in the 73rd minute, Washington couldn’t find the equalizer, giving the Courage the victory.

Although the Courage have earned 14 wins this season, the Red Stars are the only team they have not earned a point against.

Chicago has earned back-to-back victories against the league leaders, tallying three goals in each match (3-1, 3-2). Midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo scored a goal in both games, while Sofia Huerta, Alyssa Mautz, Colaprico and Press found the back of the net once. Press also earned two assists; one in each match.

After Sunday, the Red Stars will take to the road for their final three matches, starting with visiting FC Kansas City on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m. CT for Lifetime’s Game of the Week.
