Chicago Hosts Orlando in First 2018 Contest

CHICAGO – The Red Stars hope to stretch its undefeated streak to five games when they play host to Orlando Pride in a mid-week matchup this Wednesday, May 2. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go90 app.

Recently making a four-game undefeated stretch, the Red Stars battled to a 1-1 draw against. After falling in the fourth minute to Francisca Ordega’s close-range goal, Chicago bounced back as Alyssa Mautz equalized, earning her third goal of the season.

With the one-point winning, the Red Stars welcomed famed Australian forward Sam Kerr and 2017 U.S. Women’s Player of the Year Julie Ertz to the field for the first time this season. After qualifying the Australian National Team for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Kerr played all 90 minutes against the Spirit, tallying six shots as two of those were on frame. Being injured for the first part of the year, Ertz came onto the pitch in the second half, earning 16 minutes and a shot.

The Pride start the season with a 1-2-2 record, recently drawing Seattle Reign FC 1-1. Orlando began the second half down by a goal after Allie Long’s first-half goal set them apart. But with the addition of the Pride’s internationals back from duty, Brazilian Marta scored off a free kick in the 61st minute to tie the game.

Orlando experienced some heavy changes this past off season, adding several new players to its squad. The biggest name appeared was forward Sydney Leroux, who was traded to the Pride from Utah Royals FC. In a deal with Seattle, Orlando received midfielder Christine Nairn goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer and defender Carson Pickett for Australian Steph Catley and Jasmyne Spencer. Orlando also welcomed Australian international Emily van Egmond, who is making her first NWSL appearance since playing with Chicago in 2014.

The Red Stars hold a 4-0-1 record against the Pride since Orlando’s inception in 2016. Last season, Chicago defeated Orlando twice (1-0, 2-1) and drew once (1-1), keeping themselves undefeated against the Pride. Christen Press scored four of the Red Stars’ goals as Sofia Huerta added one, while Alanna Kennedy and Alex Morgan each scored one against Chicago.

Chicago will once again turn right around and travel to North Carolina to play the Courage for the first time in the three-match series of 2018. Kickoff will be set for Saturday, May 6, at 2:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go 90 app.
