Chicago Hosts Kansas City in Midwest Rivalry

GAME NOTES

CHICAGO – The Red Stars will look to bounce back from their heartbreaking midweek loss when they host Midwest rivals, FC Kansas City, on Sunday, August 20. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CT at Toyota Park and will be live on the go90 app and NWSLsoccer.com.

During the final matchup between Chicago and Seattle on Wednesday, the home side fell 1-2, after the Reign tallied two late goals. Forward Jen Hoy gave Chicago the lead in the 23rd minute, a lead that would last up to the final minute of the match.

In the 90th minute, Seattle’s Nahomi Kawasumi notched the equalizer, as rookie Katlyn Johnson scored the game winner in stoppage time. Despite Chicago having the upper hand on shots (12-9) and shots on goal (8-4), time ran out before any attempt at an equalizer could be made. The back-to-back home losses were the first Chicago has suffered at Toyota Park since moving to the stadium full time in 2016.

In FC Kansas City’s last match, the Blues came from behind to defeat Portland 2-1, marking back-to-back wins after previously going on a nine-game winless. Portland took the 1-0 lead into halftime after a penalty kick in the 44th minute. It was two goals in four minutes that found Kansas City the equalizer and game winner, scored by Yael Averbuch and Sydney Leroux, respectively.

The Red Stars still stand in playoff contention in third place with 29 points. Kansas City will look to sneak into a playoff spot as they are just seven points behind the fourth place team with six games remaining.

The last duel between the Midwestern teams saw Chicago take the 1-0 victory in the Red Stars home opener. Julie Ertz scored the lone goal just before halftime for her first goal of the season. With 18 total shots to FCKC’s 11, Chicago controlled much of the game, including five shots on goal.

With a 6-4-4 record against FCKC, Chicago will look to win the 2017 series against them before heading to Kansas City to finish the three-game matchup in September.

The Red Stars will be back on the road when they take on the Washington Spirit on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. CT.
