CHICAGO – The Red Stars look to bounce back from their seven-game winless streak when they take on the Washington Spirit on the road. The match kicks off on Saturday, June 2, at 2:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on Lifetime.
During last weekend’s match, Orlando Pride turned the tables on Chicago, defeating the home team for the second time this season, a difference to Chicago’s dominance of the three-game series in 2017. The duo of Sam Kerr and Yuki Nagasato wasn’t enough to take on the five-goals struck by the Pride.
Orlando’s Rachel Hill notched her second goal against the Red Stars in just the second minute of the match, shortly followed by Alex Morgan’s sixth-minute strike. Kerr tallied a brace thanks to the assisting of Nagasato in both goals. Substitute Sydney Leroux lifted the Pride after two back-to-back goals in two minutes, while Dani Weatherholt finished the game with a late-match tally.
Washington was recently ousted by the Houston Dash as a brace from Rachel Daly put the Dash on top. Daly scored the first goal in first-half stoppage time, while seconds into the second half, Kealia Ohai notched the second. Washington Estefania Banini narrowed the scoreline, but it wasn’t enough for a Daly to tally the game winner as Ashley Hatch’s last second goal was not enough.
This will be the second match for Washington and Chicago, with the first resulting in a 1-1 draw in Maryland. Francisca Ordega gave Washington the lead just four minutes into the game, but 15 minutes later, the lead was diminished as Chicago’s Alyssa Mautz tallied the equalizer. The match favored Chicago, shooting nine more shots than the Spirit, while maintaining most of the possession.
The Red Stars also announced the addition of goalkeeper Ryann Torerro as a National Team Replacement Player, taking the place of Naeher while she’s away with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
After the FIFA break, the Red Stars are back at home on Saturday, June 16, hosting Portland Thorns FC for Lifetime’s Game of the Week. The match will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on Lifetime. Tickets are available here.
