Chicago Hits the Road to Take on Washington Spirit

CHICAGO – Coming off a three-game unbeaten streak, the Red Stars hit the road to take on the Washington Spirit for the first time this season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go90 app.

In a 2-1-2 record start to the season, Chicago recently drew against Sky Blue FC, earning the team a second-place spot after Week 5 action. Sofia Huerta’s lone goal for the Red Stars was her second of the season and a tally in back-to-back matches. Huerta’s strike also made the record books as the fifth fastest goal in NWSL history (:44) while being the second fastest in Red Stars history, coming up four seconds shy of Alyssa Mautz’ goal in 2013.

Washington Spirit comes into the match with a 1-2-1 record, recently drawing Portland Thorns FC 1-1. Francisca Ordega earned the Spirit goal in the 37th minute, but it was Thorns’ Christine Sinclair that notched the game equalizer after slotting a penalty kick just before halftime.

U.S. Women’s National Team forward Mallory Pugh and Ordega lead Washington with two goals each. Ashley Hatch and Joanna Lohman each adding one goal.

After an unfortunate bottom of the bracket finish last season, the Spirit only got stronger this past offseason, adding several big names to the roster. During the Dispersal Draft, Washington picked up the first-overall pick of the 2017 College Draft in Rose Lavelle. In exchange for the rights to Crystal Dunn, who rejoined the league after a stint overseas with Chelsea, North Carolina traded WNT defender Taylor Smith and the 2017 Rookie of the Year in Hatch.

After a road trip to Washington, Kerr and the Red Stars will return to Toyota Park for their second midweek game on Wednesday, May 2, to take on the Orlando Pride for the first time this season. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go90 app.
