Chicago Grabs Three Points After 1-0 Victory Against Seattle

CHICAGO – The Red Stars earned a 1-0 win against Seattle Reign FC, grabbing three points to lead into a Bye Week. Sam Kerr notched in game-winning goal against Seattle.

With Chicago earning nine shots to Seattle’s four, the Red Stars saw much of the action in the first half. Forward Kerr tallied five shots, with two making their way on frame. In just her second start of the season, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo notched a shot on goal, being bobbled by goalkeeper Michelle Betos, but was soon controlled.

In an aggressive second half, Chicago continued to outshoot the Reign, winning majority of the possession throughout.

Nearing the final quarter of the match, the Red Stars nearly took the lead. Kerr started the play by driving into the box, but was dispossessed by a slide tackle. The ball fell to the feet of Morgan Brian, and with a turn, scaled it just over the cross bar.

Chicago earned the lead with minutes left as Kerr notched her ninth goal off another Yuki Nagasato assist.

Substitute Rosie White nearly upped Chicago’s lead in the final seconds, but her chip toward the goal was easily grabbed by Betos.

After a Bye Week next weekend, the Red Stars are back in action on Saturday, July 28 to face Sky Blue FC at 7 p.m. CT at Toyota Park. The match will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and the go90 app.

CHICAGO GOALS:
Sam Kerr (87’) After a short clearance from goalkeeper Michelle Betos, Yuki Nagasato headed the ball forward to Sam Kerr. An open Kerr drove into the box, causing Betos to come off her line, while Kerr slid it just under the reach of Betos.

CHICAGO SAVES:
Alyssa Naeher (78’) On the counter attack, Jasmyne Spencer split two defenders and received a lobbed ball up the field. Spencer charged into the box and struck the ball on goal, causing goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to parry the ball away to keep the scoreline even.
