Chicago Draws Boston 0-0 to Earn Point on the Road

CHICAGO – After a controversial Chicago goal called back, Chicago and Boston settled to a scoreless draw.

With a fairly inactive first half, Chicago was able to get five shots off to Boston’s one. But in the 25th minute, Sofia Huerta saw the first good look on goal as she dribbled into the final third. Boston captain Julie King pressed the forward at the top of the 18-yard box, but Huerta stayed calm and found an opportunity to take a strike that went just over the crossbar.

Minutes later, Chicago was awarded a free kick. Of the three Red Stars who stood over the ball, captain Christen Press took the shot, curling it around the defensive wall to fall straight to the arms of a diving Sammy Jo Prudhomme.

The score remained 0-0 going into halftime after neither team could capitalize on their chances.

Starting the second half, the Red Stars immediately applied pressure to Boston, as defender Arin Gilliland pushed up the right flank and crossed it into the box. Huerta connected with the ball, but the header went just over the crossbar.

In the 57th minute, Boston answered with their own back-to-back scoring chances. After a header off a corner went just wide of the post, a minute later, Breakers’ Rosie White rocketed a shot from nearly 30 yards out. The strike soared inches over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

It was once again Huerta who would find an opportunity, as she was able to get another shot off. Defender Katie Naughton lobbed the ball up to the attack, which hit off the head of a Boston defender. The ball deflected right to Huerta, who was able to get a shot toward goal, but landed to the hands of Prudhomme.

On a poor mistake from Boston, Press stole the ball from the Breakers’ backline and was able to find the back of the net, but the goal was called back as the offside flag went up.

Chicago continued to apply the pressure as Prudhomme punched out a lobbed ball from the box. With Prudhomme still off her line, substitute Taylor Comeau collected the ball and tried to chip it into the net, but Boston defenders were there to clear it over the crossbar for a Red Stars cornerkick.

With the Red Stars trying to find a late goal, Press received a ball in the Breakers final third and was able to strike it on frame, but Prudhomme made a diving save, ending the match in a scoreless draw.

Chicago ends their longest road series of the season next Saturday, July 15, at 6 p.m. CT at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey when the Red Stars face Sky Blue FC.
