CHICAGO — The Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) returns to action in May, with the Red Stars Reserves taking part in 10 regional matches within the Midwest Division. WPSL strives to provide the highest level of developmental opportunities for amateur players in the United States.
Returning presenting sponsors for the 2020 Red Stars Reserves season are the Illinois Women’s Soccer League (IWSL) and Illinois Youth Soccer Association (IYSA).
The Reserves will be coached by former Red Stars player Julianne Sitch. She was a member of the Red Stars during the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) season and returned to Chicago for the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season in 2013. Following her retirement in 2015, Sitch was named an Assistant Coach for the University of Chicago women’s soccer team. She helped the Maroons reach the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship.
The Reserves finished the 2019 season with an 8-1-1 record and a first-place finish in the Midwest Conference, reaching the East Regional Championship. Goalkeeper Jaelyn Cunningham earned Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the East Region’s Golden Glove Award.
The Red Stars Reserves team has provided a pathway to the professional ranks for many players including current Red Stars in Sarah Gorden, Zoey Goralski, and Chicago’s second-round selection in the 2020 NWSL College draft, Camryn Biegalski. The Reserves Team has also featured former professional players Mary Luba, Courtney Raetzman, Joanna Fennema (formerly Boyles), and Erin Yenney.
The Red Stars Reserves play all home games at the Evergreen Bank Group Athletic field in Oak Brook, Illinois. All matches are free admission.
