CHICAGO – Today the Chicago Red Stars and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced the 24-game schedule for the 2020 NWSL season. Chicago will face the North Carolina Courage on the road to open the season on Saturday, April 18 in a rematch of the 2019 NWSL Championship.
The Red Stars will make their home debut the following week against the Portland Thorns on Saturday, April 25 at SeatGeek Stadium. This early-season clash is a matchup of two perennial postseason contenders. In Chicago’s fifth consecutive semifinal appearance last season, they welcomed the Thorns with an NWSL Championship berth on the line. With 9,218 fans cheering on the Red Stars, Chicago came away with the 1-0 victory to send the club to their first-ever NWSL Championship.
Similar to the year prior, the league has each team partaking in a 24-game schedule, with 12 home matches and 12 away matches. Each team will face each other on three separate occasions throughout the season. Chicago’s home matches boast a variety of themes and promotions including Pride, Bark in the Park, Supernova’s Birthday, #SHEINSPIRESME, and Fan Appreciation Night. Chicago will host Portland, Houston, Orlando, and Sky Blue FC twice at home this season. The team will travel to Reign FC, North Carolina, Washington, and Utah twice this year.
The team will have a two-game road stretch on three occasions in 2020. The club’s first road trip begins with a visit to Rio Tinto Stadium for a match against the Utah Royals on May 30 before they face Sky Blue FC on June 13. The following road stretch is a Cascadia road trip that begins with a matchup against Reign FC on August 2 before traveling to Providence Park to face the Portland Thorns on August 9. The final road trip of the season begins on September 25 against the Orlando Pride before the club faces the Utah Royals on September 30.
The Red Stars will also have consecutive home games on three occasions this season. Chicago will host the Houston Dash on June 21 and the North Carolina Courage the following week on June 27. Then Chicago welcomes the Washington Spirit on August 15 before a matchup against Sky Blue FC on August 23. The final homestand of the season begins on September 2 against the Portland Thorns before Chicago welcomes Reign FC on September 6.
