Chicago Red Stars Take Down Angel City 1-2

In a Monday Night Futbol matchup, the Chicago Red Stars took down Angel City FC, 1-2, behind two goals from Ava Cook. Cook’s two goals earned the second-year forward the first brace of her young career. The Red Stars return home to SeatGeek Stadium Saturday, June 10, when the club take on the North Carolina Courage and celebrate Pride Night. 16’ Julia Bianchi delivers a ball into Angel City’s penalty area from a corner kick that finds Ava Cook who gets the ball to the back of the net, 0-1 Red Stars 

27’ A bouncing ball in LA territory finds Yuki Nagasato who heads it to Ava Cook and the goal scorer finds the net for the second time in the half, 0-2 Red Stars 

34 Angel City press the Red Stars with multiple crosses into the box with the sequence ending in a header by Julie Ertz toward goal and a diving save by Alyssa Naeher 

63’ Angel City take a shot from thirty yards out toward the Red Stars’ goal, but Alyssa Naeher jumps in front and makes the save  

75’ Angel City send a ball behind the Red Stars defense, but Tierna Davidson sprints over to cover off the attacker and send the ball out for a corner kick for Angel City, 0-2 Red Stars 

87 Angel City’s Thompson crosses the ball into Chicago’s penalty area, finds Sydney Leroux who strikes it and gets it across the line, 1-2 Red Stars 

  

GAME NOTES: 

  • Ava Cook scored her first career brace tonight. Cook is the fourth Red Star to score multiple goals in a half. She joins Sam Kerr, Yuki Nagasato and Christen Press as the only Red Stars to accomplish the feat.  
  • With her appearance tonight, Casey Krueger becomes the latest Red Star to join the 100 regular-season appearances club. The Naperville native has made all 100 appearances with the Chicago Red Stars. Krueger is the sixth Red Stars player to play all 100 appearances with the club.  
  • Julia Bianchi continues to grow more comfortable with the NWSL game. The midfielder ranked in the top five Red Stars players in recoveries (10), completed passes in the final third (8), completed passes (27), crosses attempted (5) and chances created (3).
