Chicago Red Stars Shutout Washington Spirit 0-2

The Chicago Red Stars shutout the Washington Spirit, 0-2, behind goals from Yuki Nagasato and Bianca St-Georges. The team wraps up a two-game road swing with a win and four points out of a possible six. The Red Stars will have a week off before facing Angel City FC September 17 at SeatGeek Stadium for the club’s “World Cup Welcome Back” match when the team will celebrate the players that played in this summer’s World Cup. Tickets for the September 17 match are available at chicagoredstars.com/tickets.

4’ Washington’s Trinity Rodman goes on the attack into Chicago’s 18-yard box, but Tierna Davidson and Alyssa Naeher come out to meet her to block her shot. Ashley Sanchez gets the rebound and takes another shot that Naeher also gets in front of to clear the danger

26’ Chicago’s Casey Krueger goes on a run up the left side of the pitch into Washington territory and picks out forward, Ella Stevens, with a cross, but Stevens’ attempt at goal gets picked up by the Spirit’s keeper

48’ Chicago’s Casey Krueger runs up the left side of the pitch and sends a cross into Washington’s 18-yard box that finds Bianca St-Georges wide open, and she converts the goal, 0-1 Chicago

61’ Penelope Hocking receives a ball deep in the Washington 18-yard box, crosses it to the middle to find an awaiting Yuki Nagasato who chips it into the goal, 0-2 Chicago

73’ Nagasato sends a through ball to Bianca St-Georges who carries it into the Spirit’s box and takes a shot that ricochets off the woodwork and out of play, 0-2 Chicago

  • Tonight marked defender, Tatumn Milazzo’s, 50th regular-season appearance. True to form, Milazzo put up a strong performance on both sides of the pitch with 15 passes in the final third (second most among Red Stars players) for 73 percent accuracy in that area and won possession back for the team five times defensively.
  • With her goal today, Yuki Nagasato has now been involved in 43 goal contributions across all NWSL competitions, surpassing Christen Press (42) for second most in club history (Sam Kerr – 44).
  • This is the first game the Red Stars have won by two or more goals since April against Kansas City, and this is the first win on the road with two or more goals since August 2022 against Racing Louisville FC.
  • For goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, this is the third time this season the keeper has recorded eight or more saves in a match.
  • With this win, the Red Stars hand the Washington Spirit only their second home loss this season.
