Chicago Red Stars Rally in the Rain, But Fall Short in 2-1 Loss to Gotham FC

The Chicago Red Stars put up a tough fight tonight, but ultimately fell to New Jersey/New York Gotham FC, 2-1. Cari Roccaro, Red Stars midfielder, scored the team’s lone goal despite a team performance that earned them 1.24 expected goals compared to Gotham’s .84.  

 

KEY MOMENTS: 

2’ Tatumn Milazzo sends a through ball to Ella Stevens, who in turn crosses it into Gotham’s box to find Casey Krueger, but Krueger’s shot gets deflected and goes into the arms of Gotham’s goalkeeper 

7’ Gotham’s forward chips a ball that cures toward goal, but Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher jumps and pushes it out of harm’s way  

33’ Gotham’s Lynn Williams takes a shot from 18-yards out, but it ricochets off of Chicago’s Kayla Sharples, back to another Gotham attacker who goes one-on-one against Alyssa Naeher who turns the shot away 

39’ Lynn Williams takes it herself this time and fires a shot curving toward the back post, but a diving Naeher makes the save and clears the ball 

46’ Gotham use a long throw into Chicago’s 18-yard box to find Lynn Williams whose shot goes up and over the outstretched hands of Naeher and into the net, 1-0 Gotham FC 

55’ Sarah Griffith get’s loose in Gotham’s 18-yard box, crosses the ball into Ella Stevens who passes it in turn to Cari Roccaro who finishes it to tie the match, 1-1  

69’ Gotham score off a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box, 2-1 Gotham FC 

90+1’ Tatumn Milazzo sends a ball to Bianca St-Georges on the flank and the winger sends a cross into the box that finds Jill Aguilera but her shot goes over the cross bar 

  

GAME NOTES: 

  • Cari Roccaro scored her first goal as a Red Star tonight. In addition to her goal, Roccaro ranked in the top five Red Stars in passes completed (22), passes completed in the final third (7) and tackles won (2). 
  • Sarah Griffith earned her first minutes with the club after a stint on the 45-day disabled list. The young Red Star came in and immediately made an impact, assisting on Roccaro’s goal, tallying a cross into Gotham’s box and a 71.4 percent passing percentage.
