Chicago Red Stars Gritty Performance Earns Team a 1-1 Tie Against Washington

The Chicago Red Stars put up a gritty performance to walk away with a point against the Washington Spirit with a 1-1 tie. Rookie Ally Schlegel linked up with Canadian national team defender, Bianca St-Georges, to score the Red Stars’ lone goal.

KEY MOMENTS:

9’ A foot race breaks out between Alyssa Naeher and a Spirit forward to see who can get to a ball in space first. Naeher gets there first and prevents the Spirit from causing harm

23’ The Spirit send a ball into the 18-yard box that finds the head of a Spirit attacker, but the header is sent straight into the hands of a waiting Naeher

26’ Ella Stevens collides with a Spirit player in Chicago’s 18-yard box and a penalty is called for the Spirit. Hatch converts the attempt to put Washington up, 0-1

32’ Nifty passing by the Red Stars finds Ally Schlegel open on the right side of Washington’s 18-yard box. The rookie sends a perfect cross to Bianca St-Georges, who puts it away to even the score, 1-1

39’ Ashley Sanchez ramps up for a run into the Red Star’s defensive third, but Tatumn Milazzo times a slide tackle perfectly to dispossess Sanchez

53’ Ella Stevens sends a through ball past Washington’s defense that finds an open St-Georges, but she’s unable to get enough of the ball to cause harm and the ball goes out for a Red Stars corner

56 Arin Wright takes the ball 70 yards up the field and takes a shot, but Washington’s keeper is able to corral the ball

84’ Trinity Rodman goes on a run on the left flank looking to go to goal or to get a cross into the box, but Milazzo slides and takes the ball off Rodman’s feet

87’ Washington’s efforts to score another goal before the end of the game gives them two dangerous shots at goal, but Naeher makes a stop by punching away a ball and then getting in front of another shot from outside the box

90+2’ A mistake in the midfield gifts Washington the ball and they go on a dangerous run, but Chicago’s defense recovers as a unit to stop the run and clear the danger
