Chicago Red Stars Fall 0-2 to Louisville

The Chicago Red Stars lost to Racing Louisville FC in the team’s second UKG Challenge Cup match of the season. The team is now 0-2-0 in Challenge Cup play with four games remaining in the group stage of the tournament.

 

KEY MOMENTS: 

19’ Tatumn Milazzo rushes over to cover a ball lofted over the back line to an attacking Louisville player, and is able to cover and clear the danger 

 

34’ A corner served in by Chicago’s Sam Fisher finds Ella Stevens in the box, but the header goes just wide of the goal 

 

44’ Louisville go on a breakaway and finish it to take the lead, 0-1 Louisville 

 

47’ Jenna Bike receives a ball off a throw in, breaks the defender’s ankles and sends a good cross into Louisville’s box, but their defenders clear it away before it finds a Red Stars forward, 0-1 Louisville 

 

57’ Louisville, on the attack again, slide a pass on the ground through the Red Stars’ backline, giving their attacker a chance to strike it, but Alyssa Naeher gets a glove on the ball and the defense clears the danger 

 

60’ Cheyna Matthews and Bianca St-Georges connect on passes up the field into Louisville’s box that ends in a powerful strike by St-Georges, but it goes straight to the keeper’s awaiting hands 

 

71’ Off a free kick, Louisville find the head of one of their players, the ball loops up and over the outstretched hand of Naeher and into the goal, 0-2 Louisville  

 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Duke alumna, Sophie Jones, made her first start in NWSL action tonight. The rookie debuted for the Red Stars earlier this season when the team took on Mexico’s Women’s National Team.
  • Taylor Malham also made her first start with the Red Stars against her former club, Racing Louisville FC. The first-year Red Star made it to the top five Red Stars players in shots, completed passes and recoveries.
  • A year after injuring her ACL, defender Kayla Sharples played her first minutes of the season after coming on for Tierna Davidson in the second half.
