Red Stars Draw Even in Challenge Cup Match with Kansas City Current, 0-0

The Chicago Red Stars walk away with a point after a gritty performance against Kansas City ended in a scoreless draw. Goalkeeper, Emily Boyd, recorded her first career penalty save in the 24th minute to keep the Current off the board.

KEY MOMENTS:

13’ Chicago’s Bianca St-Georges receives a ball down the right wing in Kansas City’s defensive third, makes a run at goal, cuts back, losing her defender, and sends a cross to Penelope Hocking whose shot goes wide of the goal

23’ Kayla Sharples’ slide tackle to block a shot by Kansas City results in a hand ball in the box and a penalty awarded to the Current. The attempt is taken by the Current’s LaBonta and is blocked by Chicago’s goalkeeper, Emily Boyd

31’ Chicago’s Yuki Nagasato finds St-Georges on another run down Kansas City’s flank, this time the cross finds forward, Ava Cook, whose shot gets blocked by the Kansas City defense, but midfielder, Julia Bianchi, gets the rebound and takes another shot that goes just wide

44’ Kansas City gets a ball to their forward with a low cross in dangerous position in Chicago’s 18-yard box, but once again Emily Boyd makes a save to clear the danger

66’ A well-placed ball from Julia Bianchi to Sarah Griffith finds the forward alone in the Current’s 18-yard box, but the ensuing shot gets blocked, rebounded by Ava Cook and saved by Kansas City’s keeper

69’ Chicago’s Taylor Malham whips a ball into the Current’s penalty area that finds the head of Ava Cook, but her header goes wide of the net

90+5’ Kansas City’s keeper comes out to clear a ball but takes a bad touch and causes the ball to bounce to Nagasato, who heads the ball over the keeper, but it gets deflected out of bounds for a corner kick.

90+6’ Sarah Griffith whips a ball into Kansas City’s penalty area that finds Ally Schlegel’s head, but a slight deflection from a Current defender puts the ball into their keeper’s gloves

GAME NOTES:

  • Emily Boyd’s save on Kansas City’s penalty kick attempt was the first PK save of her professional career. In addition to the PK save, Boyd saved all five of Kansas City’s shots on target for another impressive night between the sticks for the keeper.
  • Chicago’s defensive line did more than hold their own tonight against Kansas City. Tierna Davidson (43), Taylor Malham (42) and Kayla Sharples (38) were the top three players on the pitch with the most completed passes. Davidson also ranked in the top five in recoveries, Malham was in the top five in crosses attempted and Sharples had the highest passing percentage among all players.
  • Casey Krueger, who was celebrated after the match for reaching her 100th regular-season game played, trusted her fellow defenders and unleashed her offensive prowess. Krueger had two shots, five crosses attempted and created a chance at goal.
