Chicago Red Stars Fall to Kansas City Current 6-3

The Chicago Red Stars fell to the Kansas City Current 6-3 in an action-packed match. With the loss tonight, the Red Stars are now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The Red Stars return to Chicago next week for their final regular-season match of the 2023 season against OL Reign at SeatGeek Stadium.  

 

KEY MOMENTS: 

12’ With a give and go, Chicago’s Penelope Hocking and Bianca St-Georges send Chicago off on a fast break toward Kansas City’s goal. Hocking dribbles it thirty yards before finding Ella Stevens open for a shot that’s picked up by the Current’s goalkeeper 

 

14’ Two minutes later, Kansas City go on a run of their own and find the back of the net, 1-0 Kansas City 

 

20’ Off a corner kick, Chicago deliver a ball into the Current’s 18-yard box that bounces off a couple of Chicago players before falling to the feet of Kayla Sharples who buries it to tie the match, 1-1  

 

22’ The Current go on the attack after Chicago’s goal, string passes together and get the lead back, 2-1 Kansas City 

 

45+1’ Chicago’s Arin Wright sends a long ball into Kansas City territory that lands at the feet of one of their defenders. The defender passes it back to their goalkeeper who is unable to get their foot on the ball and it goes into the back of the net for an own goal, 3-2 Kansas City 

 

50’ The Red Stars’ Julia Bianchi receives a deflected ball just outside of Kansas City’s 18-yard box. The midfielder takes the shot from distance that gets the fingertips of the Current’s keeper before hitting the woodwork and ending the danger, 3-2 Kansas City 

 

52’ Debinha gets free behind Chicago’s backline goes to goal and extends the Current’s lead, 4-2 Kansas City 

 

63’ Chicago’s Tatumn Milazzo receives the ball in the attacking third runs into the Current’s 18-yard box and sends a diagonal pass back to a trailing Julia Bianchi who takes a shot that is deflected by a Current player and lands at the feet of Chicago’s Bianca St-Georges who puts it away to pull the score within one, 4-3 Kansas City 

 

90+1’ The Current’s Michelle Cooper, on a run toward the Red Stars’ goal, dumps the ball off to Cece Kizer and the forward gets the ball into the net, 5-3 Kansas City 

 

90+7’ Kansas City find an attacker behind the Red Stars’ backline who gets the ball into the net, 6-3 Kansas City

  • With her goal tonight, Bianca St-Georges is now tied with Ella Stevens for most goals on the team (4) 
  • Chicago Red Stars have scored in their last 5 games in the National Womens Soccer League, their longest run of games with a goal in the competition since a run of 8 games from 2nd October 2022 to 7th May 2023
