WPS Formed
The Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS) was founded in 2007 and played its first season in 2009. The logo featured the silhouette of retired soccer star Mia Hamm. The Chicago Red Stars are one of the original seven teams and fielded some of the greatest women’s soccer players in the world including Brazilian Cristiane, England’s Karen Carney, and U.S. Women’s National Team members Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Lindsay Tarpley. Unfortunately, despite this star power across the league, the WPS followed in the footsteps of the WUSA and folded in 2012 after its third season.
