Women's Soccer at Olympics
Women’s soccer competed at the Olympic games for the first time in 1996 with only 8 participating teams. The US team took home this inaugural gold, the first of many the US would collect over the years, with a 2-1 win against China. This championship match drew a crowd of 76,489. Unfortunately, NBC TV coverage did not show the game live and only gave viewers periodic updates and interviewed U.S. players after the medal ceremony.
