Storylines

Reppin’ the Red Stars
Chicago had six stars called up for last week’s international window. Tierna Davidson, Casey Krueger and Alyssa Naeher joined the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) for friendlies against South Africa in Cincinnati and at Chicago’s own Soldier Field September 21 and 24, respectively. Naeher tended goal and Krueger came on in the 77th minute in Cincinnati, while Davidson and Krueger earned starts in Chicago. Meanwhile, Cheyna Matthews and Bianca St-Georges went up against each other as Canada and Jamaica took each other on September 22 and 26, looking to qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Matthews started for Jamaica in the first match, while St-Georges was available off the bench for Canada in both matches. Additionally, Jill Aguilera traveled with the Puerto Rican Women’s National Team as they took on Mexico September 22 in their first CONCACAF “Road to W Gold Cup” group stage match. Aguilera played a full 90 minutes for El Huracán Azul.
Familiar Foes
Chicago and Louisville meet once again September 30, the fourth time Racing and the Red Stars face off in 2023. While Chicago looks to extend their no-loss streak to four matches, Louisville is fresh off a loss to Houston and aiming to secure a sweep in all 2023 meetings against the Red Stars. The last regular-season matchup between the two teams saw Racing hold the Red Stars scoreless, 3-0, May 11. The clubs also met twice, May 31 and July 20, in group stage play of the NWSL UKG Challenge Cup. Racing claimed both of those fixtures 2-0. The Red Stars and Racing sit below the playoff threshold with 21 and 24 points respectively, and with just three matches left for all teams in the league, you can bet all 22 players on the pitch will be fighting tooth and nail to maximize points and earn a spot in the NWSL playoffs.
Rockin’ with Roccaro
Midfielder Cari Roccaro has been putting in work both on and off the field for the Red Stars this season. On September 22, Roccaro spoke at the Chicago White Sox Game Changers Summit, discussing mental health in sports during the Strengthening the Body AND Mind in Sports Culture Panel. Roccaro also is the co-host of the “Butterfly Road” podcast, where she talks about the importance of both mental and physical health along with her co-host, Ginny McGowan. On the pitch, Roccaro currently has the highest passing accuracy on the team (83.85 percent) and leads the Red Stars in tackles (40) and minutes played (1,577). Additionally, Roccaro and defender, Casey Krueger, are the two Red Stars with the most starts this season with 18, and both average more than 80 minutes per game. Starting in every match against Racing this season, Roccaro’s passing accuracy in those matches has never fallen below 89.8 percent, meaning that once again Roccaro will be integral to the Red Stars’ game plan against their Midwest rival.
