Storylines

Wo-ah, We’re Halfway There
The faceoff between the Red Stars and the Thorns begins the second half of National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) 2023 regular season for both clubs. Chicago and Portland will surely be striving for a positive result after they both suffered losses to end the first half of the regular season. Neither the Thorns, who currently sit third in league standings after the 2022 NWSL Champions were upset by eighth-place Orlando, nor the Red Stars, currently in tenth, are as high in the table as they hoped to be halfway through the season. But as NWSL fans know all too well, a team’s luck can turn on a dime—and no club can be counted out yet.
Thorn(s) in the Side
Defeating Portland would certainly mean more than just adding a tally in the win column for the Red Stars. A Chicago victory would be a welcome reprisal following the 4-0 defeat handed down by the Thorns the last time the teams met almost a month ago. In addition, Chicago haven’t walked away with a full three points against Portland since 2021, with three of their last five meetings ending in a draw or a Thorns win (LLDWW). An unrelenting offense and an impermeable back line will be key for the Red Stars, as their last three meetings each saw Chicago concede two or more goals, while Portland did not allow any goals in two of those three.
Ballin’ Bianchi
Midfielder Julia Bianchi has been dominating in the midfield since making her NWSL debut for the Red Stars April 15. The Brazilian international wasted no time proving she earned her first start on May 7, when she logged her first NWSL assist from a corner kick to Ella Stevens, who put the ball past New Jersey/New York’s keeper in the 53rd minute. Bianchi currently holds the second-highest passing accuracy on the Red Stars roster (83.8 percent), only outdone by fellow midfielder, Cari Roccaro (85.0 percent). In last weekend’s match against North Carolina, Bianchi won more tackles (4) than any other Chicago or North Carolina player, collected the second-highest Chicago passing accuracy (88.1 percent) and ranked fourth in total touches (59) on the Red Stars stat sheet.
