Storylines

Familiar Foes
This will be the first time the Red Stars play Mexico’s Women’s National Team, but despite this fact, there will be faces familiar to the Red Stars on Mexico’s roster. Diana Ordóñez and María Sánchez both play for the Houston Dash, the team that spoiled the Red Stars’ 2023 home opener by taking down the home team 2-1. Both Ordóñez and Sánchez scored during that match, making them the first Mexican duo to score in an NWSL match. Sánchez, a former Red Star player, is joined by another former Red Star player in Katie Johnson. Johnson makes her return to the Mexican national team after a few years absence.
Next Player Up
For this match, the Red Stars will be without the help of Tierna Davidson, Casey Krueger, Alyssa Naeher, Bianca St-Georges and Mallory Swanson as the five Red Stars are away with their own respective national teams. This gives younger players the opportunity to step up and show what they’re capable of in this match. In only two NWSL games this season, Red Stars fans have yet to see rookies Sophie Jones, Ally Schlegel and Mackenzie Wood take to the pitch. First-year Red Stars players like Julia Bianchi, Brenna Lovera and Taylor Malham have also yet to see the pitch. Will Saturday bring changes to Coach Chris Petrucelli’s lineup? We’ll have to wait to see.
How We Stack Up
Saturday’s match will be the second match the Mexico Women’s National Team plays against an NWSL club. The team played Angel City FC last year and walked away with the win. The Tri Color are ranked 35th in the FIFA World Rankings, while the Red Stars have not had an ideal start to the NWSL season, having lost their first two matches by goals from penalty kicks. Facing off against players like Charlyn Corral (Pachuca), Katie Johnson, Diana Ordóñez, Kenti Robles (Real Madrid), María Sánchez and Mia Zuazua (Juarez), the Red Stars will have their hands full in this match as the team tries to correct their course and get back to winning ways. Whatever the outcome, fans in attendance at SeatGeek will be in for an exciting and competitive match featuring some of the best soccer players in the world.
