One Goal is All it Takes
Monday’s meeting between Angel City and the Red Stars will be the third in the teams’ history. Angel City, behind a goal by former Chicago Red Star Savannah McCaskill, took the win in their first meeting last season with a score of 1-0. In their second meeting, in which both teams were fighting for the final playoff spot in the 2022 NWSL playoffs, Chicago came out on top after a goal by Mallory Swanson gave the Red Stars the 1-0 win. In both meetings between the two, the home team walked away with three points. Does that bode well for Angel City, or can Chicago spoil the party in L.A.?
A Glitch in the Matrix:
In a bit of déjà vu, Chicago and LA are keeping each other company in the NWSL standings with LA in 10th with nine points and Chicago in 11th with seven points. The two teams also are close in goals scored, with 12 each, and shots on goal, with Chicago at 33 and LA at 31. With these similarities it may only take one special moment from either side that allows one of these teams to walk away with three points and climb up the standings, and that is where Chicago separates itself from LA. From Opta Stats, Chicago ranks second in “Big Chance Conversion” with 55.6 percent conversion on big chances, where LA converts 23.1 percent of big chances, ranking 12th in the league.
Rocking with Roccaro:
Monday’s match against LA will be Cari Roccaro’s first visit to LA since leaving her former club last season, of which she was the second highest goal scorer in 2022 with four goals . Since joining Chicago, Roccaro’s has been consistent presence in Chicago’s lineup, missing only one game due to injury. The veteran uses her experience to affect the game on both sides of the field, as she leads the team in tackles and passing accuracy. On May 27, in the match against the Orlando Pride, Roccaro made her 100th NWSL regular-season appearance, a milestone the midfielder amassed across stints with the Houston Dash, North Carolina Courage, Angel City and now Chicago.
