CHICAGO – The Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) kicked off over the weekend and the Chicago Red Stars Reserves picked up their first win in the regular season for the 2017 season.
The Red Stars Reserves are the official amateur team of the Chicago Red Stars professional side of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and are comprised of current and former collegiate soccer players. Returning presenting sponsor for the 2017 Red Stars Reserves season are Illinois Women’s Soccer League (IWSL) and Illinois Youth Soccer Association (IYSA).
The Reserves are back on the road in two weeks when the team will travel to Kansas City to play GSI and the Kansas City Courage in back-to-back games on June 17 and 18, respectively.
Following a bye week, the Red Stars Reserves will come back to play three straight games at home, with their home opener on Saturday, July 1 against GSI. The next day, Chicago will face off against the Minnesota TwinStars and go head-to-head against Des Moines Menace on July 8.
The Red Stars Reserves will finish the regular season of play with two consecutive games against Des Moines and Kansas City, which will be their final regular season home match on July 16.
The amateur teams provides an opportunity to compete at an elite level and allows the possibility to be called up to the Red Stars full team. After winning the National Championship in 2015, the Reserves posted an undefeated record in 2016 before eventually losing the National Championship semifinal match against the Boston Breakers.
Past Reserves players include Mary Luba, who was signed to a professional contract after the Reserves 2015 National Championship and 2016 College Draft picks in Sarah Gorden, Katie Naughton and Courtney Raetzman.
The Red Stars Reserves play all home games at the Oak Brook Polo Field in Oak Brooke, Illinois. All matches are free admission. The full schedule can be viewed here.
