The Facts: Chicago vs. Portland

MATCH INFO: Chicago Red Stars vs. Portland Thorns FC on Saturday, September 30, at 3 p.m. CT. Match will be broadcast live on Lifetime as the Game of the Week.

SERIES HISTORY: Portland dominates the win category over Chicago, as the Red Stars have been able to grab just one victory against the Thorns, while being outscored 15-22. In 2017, Chicago has dropped points in both matches, including a home loss on August 12. In nine matches against the Thorns, captain Christen Press has scored six goals for the Red Stars.

SCOUTING PORTLAND: The Portland roster never seizes to disappoint on paper. Entering the match at Providence Park, both Portland and Chicago have clinched a spot in the playoffs, with the Thorns earning a home semifinal match. Christine Sinclair leads the team with eight goals, while Nadia Nadim and Hayley Raso have added five goals and three assists each. The roster of Portland became even stronger last week when Tobin Heath made her 2017 NWSL debut. Meanwhile, Adrianna Franch just set an NWSL record, recording her 11th shutout of the season.

RED STARS MILESTONES: With her 11th goal of the season, Christen Press set a single season record for the Red Stars franchise. Press currently sits at 36 goals in just 61 appearances for Chicago.

USWNT CALL-UP: Sofia Huerta earned her first call from the U.S. Women’s National Team and earned her first cap on September 15, when the U.S. took on New Zealand. Huerta, 24, had been called in to the previous camp, but did not dress for the games due to the U.S. WNT trying to gain the rights from Mexico, in which Huerta played five games for.

YOUNG & EXPERIENCED SQUAD: The Red Stars have one of the youngest rosters in the league, with a combined average age of 24.45, with seven players 23 years old or younger. However, a majority of the team has been together for three seasons, making it one of the most cohesive teams in the league.

RED CARD NAGASATO: Yuki Nagasato will be ineligible for action in the match between Chicago and Portland after receiving a red card in the 89th minute in the Red Stars game against the Dash. After entering in the 86th minute, Nagasato slid into Rachel Daly and was immediately shown a red by the center ref.

PLAYOFF RACE: The Red Stars currently hold third place in the NWSL league standings with 39 points. With North Carolina, Portland, Chicago and Orlando clinching the four coveted playoff positions, the Red Stars and the Pride are currently waiting to see if they match up with the Courage or the Thorns in the semifinals. North Carolina clinched the NWSL Shield on Wednesday in their match against the Houston Dash.
