The Facts: Chicago vs. North Carolina

MATCH INFO: Chicago Red Stars vs. North Carolina Courage on Sunday, September 3, at 5 p.m. CT; Toyota Park; Bridgeview, Illinois. Watch live on the go90 app and NWSLsoccer.com.

SERIES HISTORY: Chicago and North Carolina faced off back-to-back during the month of May, with the Red Stars coming away with both wins. Vanessa DiBernardo found a goal in each, while Christen Press earned an assist in both matches. Overall, the two teams have battled to a 6-4-3 record since the inaugural season, dating back to when NC Courage was Western New York Flash.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA: The Courage suffered their first loss of 2017 after Orlando beat them 3-1 and followed it with another loss to Chicago after starting the season 4-0. In his first season guiding the team in 2016, Paul Riley led the team to the NWSL Championship, defeating Washington Spirit for the title. Jessica McDonald and Lynn Williams finished 2016 on top of the scoring chart and now with the added threat of Debinha, North Carolina is arguably one of the best offensive teams in the league. The Courage currently lead the NWSL in shots (77) and is second in shots on goal (38).

RED STARS MILESTONES: With her 10th goal of the season, Christen Press now has 35 goals in her time playing for the Chicago Red Stars.

LEADING THE NWSL: Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo is tied for the lead in assists (17) for all active players in NWSL. In 2015 and 2016 DiBernardo finished second overall in the NWSL in assists.

USWNT CALL-UP: Sofia Huerta earned her first call from the U.S. Women’s National Team and practiced with the team during the recent FIFA break. Huerta, 24, did not dress for the games due to the U.S. WNT currently trying to gain the rights from Mexico, in which Huerta played five games for.

HOME HEARTBREAK: Chicago moved to Toyota Park full-time for the 2016 NWSL season and quickly adapted to the pitch. Since moving to Toyota Park, the Red Stars have lost just four times. However, the past three home games mark all three of those losses at Toyota Park in 2017.

YOUNG & EXPERIENCED SQUAD: The Red Stars have one of the youngest rosters in the league, with a combined average age of 24.45, with seven players 23 years old or younger. However, a majority of the team has been together for three seasons, making it one of the most cohesive teams in the league.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Red Stars currently sit in third place in the NWSL league standings with 32 points. However, it is just five points that are separating teams three to six.

NEXT MATCH: After Sunday, the Red Stars will take to the road for their final three matches, starting with visiting FC Kansas City on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m. CT for Lifetime’s Game of the Week.
