Sky Blue’s Stoppage Time Goal Sinks Chicago

CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars lose a heartbreaker to Sky Blue FC thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Paige Monaghan. Sam Kerr’s late equalizer was not enough, as Monahan scored two goals and goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan has five saves to propel the hosts to victory.

 Key Moments

6’ Julie Ertz makes a quick pass to Sam Kerr who starts a great run near midfield to get past Dorsey and is able to get a shot off under pressure that is saved by Sheridan’s fingertips.

20’ Sky Blue gets their first chance of the game with Carli Lloyd finding Jen Hoy in the 18-yard box, but Sarah Gorden turns on the afterburners and slides in to stop a dangerous shot attempt.

32’ Kerr and Ertz connect again to create a chance for Chicago. After forcing an interception near the Sky Blue goal, Kerr passes the ball to a charging Ertz. She fires a missile headed for goal, but Sheridan rises to tip the ball over the crossbar.

69’ A free kick is awarded to Chicago and Savannah McCaskill hits a perfectly weighted ball from 22 yards out, but Sheridan again is able to push it over the crossbar and deny the Red Stars.

71’ Paige Monaghan makes a great run at the edge of the box and her shot hits the upper corner of the goal to give Sky Blue the lead.

86’ Kerr makes a great run into the 18-yard box and gets a shot off, but it’s Sheridan again who is in the right position to make the save.

90+1’ A Chicago goal starts all the way from Alyssa Naeher as she hits it into the box where enough heads get to the ball for it to land at the feet of Sam Kerr who hits the one-time volley into the back of the net.

90+2’ Monaghan gets the late game-winning goal from a shot from distance.
